Proton Beam Therapy is a form of external beam radiation therapy which uses protons rather than photons (X-rays). The positive charge and large mass of the proton makes it easier to control its placement within the patient. Energized protons slow down as they pass through tissue displaying minimal lateral scatter and depositing most of their energy at the end of their path. Through the sophisticated software algorithms, the penetration depth and shape of the protons are three dimensionally controlled to fit precisely with a tumor target.
